TRAIL GROUPS IN THE KENAI PENINSULA BOROUGH

SEWARD NORDIC SKI CLUB

Purpose: A non-profit organization dedicated to grooming trails on public land for public use. Primarily non-motorized winter trails, some summer use on Mile 12. The Club has been active for over 20 years. The club designed and constructed the trails at Mile 12 of the Seward Highway. These trails are designed in accordance with Federation International Ski standards and are suitable for national and international ski competitions.
Projects and Activities: Groom 4 trails in the Seward area:

Iditarod trail from Nash Road to Bear Lake (snowmachines allowed in winter, non-motorized in summer)

Mile 12 of the Seward Highway (cross-country skiers only in winter, non-motorized in summer)

The closed portion of Exit Glacier road occasionally groomed in winter.

Glacier Creek Trail – (multi-use winter trail)

The club recently acquired a new Piston Bully 200 trail groomer with tiller.

Membership: about 35 active members

Individual Membership - $15

Family membership - $25

Volunteer opportunities: many available, grooming, community events-club will be training trial groomers on the new equipment this year.

Meetings: Meetings are held periodically, announced in newsletter.
Events:
  • Provides an after-school ski program at Seward Elementary in Feb and March
  • Groom mile 12 for high school ski events and Iditarod Trail for training use by high school racers
  • Provide rental of ski equipment to fit elementary school aged children
  • Spaghetti feed before Mt. Marathon Race – fundraiser
  • Race at exit glacier – 5 k race
  • Periodic work days on the trail
