TRAIL GROUPS IN THE KENAI PENINSULA BOROUGH

IDITAROD TRAIL BLAZERS, SEWARD CHAPTER

Purpose: The Seward Iditarod Trail Blazers, Inc. is a private non-profit corporation, which was formed: (1) to promote the establishment of a connected trail from Seward to Nome, (2) to support historical societies and government agencies in the establishment, maintenance and preservation of historic sites, cabins and other ob ects related to the Iditarod National Historic Trail System, (3) to oversee the location, construction and maintenance of the Iditarod Trail segment from Seward to Crow Pass and (4) to hold regular meetings and other activities for the recreation, instruction and education of the members as well as the general public. The club has been active since 1982.

When the Iditarod Trail was declared a National Historic Trail in 1978, it was understood that the original route from Seward to Crow Pass could not be used as it has been much overlain by the Alaska Railroad and the Seward Highway. A new trail route was identified along those portions. The Trailblazers, in cooperation with the City of Seward, and the US Forest Service, have made substantial progress on the new route within the City of Seward, and from Nash Road to Snow River. The trailblazers continue to refine the route and construct the trail North of Seward.
