Position Description: Plumber/General Maintenance Mechanic I/II

Service Type: Classified - Range N/O

Definition: Under the general direction and supervision of the director of maintenance or his designee, the plumber installs and repairs all types of plumbing and heating systems and performs general maintenance duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications: High school diploma or GED; at least three years experience within the past five years in plumbing maintenance or construction; be skilled with power tools; journeyman level skills in four building crafts; and posses a valid, unrestricted Alaska Commercial Class B drivers license. Journeyman plumber's certificate preferred. This position may require flying in small aircraft and being away from home overnight. Requires the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.

Essential Functions:

Performs work required in the installation, repair and replacement of all types of plumbing and heating systems.

Performs all general maintenance work as assigned.

Works with preventative maintenance program

Coordinates purchasing with appropriate personnel.

Cleans up after each project leaving area, job site and vehicle clean and safe.

Works with blueprints, borough and state mechanical standards, specifications and International Building Codes.

Works from ladders, scaffolding and man-lifts up to a height of 50 feet.

Must routinely transport heavy loads.

May schedule and designate work assignments to crewmembers clearly, in both oral and written form during summer schedule.

Other Functions:

May estimate cost and plan projects.

May operate vehicles requiring an Alaska Commercial Class B driver's license.

May perform asbestos removal/containment duties.

Physical Demands: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand; walk; use hands and fingers dexterously to operate tools or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and communicate orally. Vision abilities required. Sitting is required occasionally. The employee must frequently transport up to 50 pounds and occasionally transport up to 100 pounds.
