SUBJECT: Resolution 2003-112, encouraging the Alaska cruise ship industry to partner with the Alaska seafood industry by serving wild Alaska salmon on all cruise ships operating in Alaskan coastal waters

This resolution encourages the Alaska cruise ship industry to endorse the Alaska seafood industry by serving wild Alaskan salmon on their cruise ships. A virtually identical resolution was adopted by the Homer City Council September 22, 2003, and this is intended to provide additional support for the concept. Information contained in the whereas clauses regarding the commercial salmon harvest value decreasing from $489 million in 1994 to $163 million in 2002 is derived from information supplied by the Alaska Department of Fish & Game. Additionally, the Marine Stewardship Council ("MSC") is an independent organization, which was created in 1996 to devise a market incentive for fishery operations to reverse the trend of overfishing, which threatens the continued survival of fish stocks around the world. The MSC scheme is based upon a set of "Principles and Criteria" that describes indicators supporting a fisheries claim that the fish it sells is from a well-managed and sustainable source. MSC has developed a labeling scheme for sustainable seafood products, and, as of this date, the Alaska salmon fishery has become the first U.S. fishery to receive the MSC label for sustainability. For more information, see www.msc.org. Your support of this resolution is appreciated.
