SUBJECT: Ordinances 2004-19-03: Accepting and appropriating four Volunteer Fire Assistance grants from the Alaska Department of Natural Resources

Four Borough service areas, Anchor Point Fire and Emergency Medical Service Area ("APFSA"), Bear Creek Fire Service Area ("BCFSA"), Kachemak Emergency Service Area ("KESA") and Nikiski Fire Service Area ("NFSA"), submitted an application for a grant under the 2004 Volunteer Fire Assistance ("VFA") grant program. The Alaska Department of Natural Resources, Division of Forestry, administers these federal funds provided under Public Law 95-313. The Borough was recently notified by DNR that grants have been awarded to all four service areas as follows: APFSA - $1,981, BCFSA - $4,997.50, KESA - $4,925, and NFSA - $2,622.

Grant funds may be used for equipment purchases or training. The grant program requires matching funds on a one-to-one basis. Expenditures for firefighting equipment or training made by the service areas during the 2004 calendar year are eligible costs under the grant program. The service areas have sufficient funds in their current operating budgets to meet the matching requirement.

A public hearing date of September 7 has been requested. Service area boards are scheduled to meet prior to the requested public hearing date. Acceptance of the grant will be on their meeting agendas. The results of the board meeting action will be provided to the Assembly on or before September 7.
