SUBJECT: Ordinance Authorizing the Receipt of a Rural Fire Assistance Grant from the National Park Service and Appropriating $20,000 to the Bear Creek Fire Service Area

The Bear Creek Fire Service Area submitted an application for a grant under the 2002 Rural Fire Assistance grant program. Recently they were notified that their application was accepted and a grant awarded to them in the amount of $20,000.

The grant program funds training, equipment purchases, and prevention activities, on a cost shared basis of 90/10. The Service Area has expended funds from its FY02 budget to meet the match requirement. They plan to purchase firefighting equipment and provide training for emergency vehicle operations. The Service Area Board is scheduled to meet on October 8, 2002, to consider acceptance of the grant. The results of their action will be incorporated into the ordinance on the date of public hearing.

The National Park Service needs to have the funds obligated as soon as possible to meet its deadlines. Therefore, a shortened hearing date of October 22, 2002, is requested.
