SUBJECT: Ordinance Authorizing the Receipt of a Volunteer Fire Assistance Grant from the Alaska Department Of Natural Resources and Appropriating $3,100 to the Bear Creek Fire Service Area

Bear Creek Fire Service Area submitted an application for a grant under the 2001 Volunteer Fire Assistance ("VFA") grant program. The Alaska Department of Natural Resources, Division of Forestry, administers these federal funds provided under Public Law 95-313. Bear Creek Fire Service Area was recently notified that their application was accepted and a grant awarded to them in the amount of $3,100.

The grant program requires that the Service Area match the grant funds on a one-to-one basis. The Service Area has funds available in its FY02 budget under account 48514 - firefighting and rescue equipment - to meet the match requirement. Grant funds will be combined with Service Area funds to purchase fire response equipment. The Service Area Board approved acceptance of the grant and expenditure of the matching funds during their Board meeting on August 14, 2001 (see attached minutes). Attached is the list of needed items that were submitted with the grant application. Since the request was greater than the amount awarded, not all of the items will be purchased with grant funds. Other funds will be used to purchase the remaining items.
