Members of the Kenai Peninsula Borough Assembly

THRU: Dale Bagley, Borough Mayor

FROM: Bonnie L. Golden, Grants Manager

DATE: September 11, 2001

SUBJECT: Ordinance Accepting and Appropriating a $44,032 Grant from the Federal Emergency Management Agency for Bear Creek Fire Service Area Wellness and Fitness Programs

Last spring the U.S. Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) announced its new Assistance to Firefighters Grant program. Bear Creek Fire Service Area submitted an application and was recently notified of a grant award under the Wellness and Fitness portion of FEMA's grant program.

FEMA approved a total project cost of $48,925 for wellness and fitness. More specifically, Bear Creek wishes to provide physical examinations, including lab work and stress tests. In addition, they wish to purchase physical fitness equipment to be used by its volunteers at the station. Pursuant to the grant requirements, Bear Creek must provide a local match, in cash. Based upon FEMA's formula for matching requirements, Bear Creek must contribute 10% of the total project cost, or in this case $4,893. Funds are available in the operating budget under the physical examinations account (207.51210.43014) to meet the matching requirement. The Service Area Board is expected to meet on October 10, 2001, at which time they will address acceptance of the grant and the expenditure for the matching funds. The attached ordinance appropriates the grant funds, including the matching funds, to the proper accounts.
