MEMORANDUM

TO: Timothy Navarre, Assembly President

Members, Kenai Peninsula Borough Assembly

FROM: Jack Brown, Assembly Member

DATE: April 19, 2001

SUBJECT: Ordinance 2001-14, compensation of planning commission members

Planning commission members are currently paid $50 per regular or special meeting attended. This amount was established 20 years ago in 1981. The commissioners attend at least two regularly scheduled meetings per month and contribute many hours outside of meetings in preparation for the meetings. It has become increasingly difficult to attract qualified persons to serve in this important function, and increasing the rate from $50 to $125 per meeting will help to better compensate the commissioners for their time and aid in attracting new applicants.

Hearing on shortened time is requested because I believe this change should be in place as soon as possible, and May 15, 2001, is my final meeting.
